Greg Maddox – After Mike Maddox made the decision to stay in Texas, his brother decided that Texas sounded like a good idea to him as well! The Rangers have hired Greg Maddox to be the special assistant to general manager Jon Daniels. “What I expect to be doing is helping the players and the coaches as much as possible,” Greg said Tuesday. “I’ll be another set of eyes and use the experience I’ve learned and pass that along, and help out as much as possible..” (texasrangers.com) Maddox said on Tuesday. Mike Maddox is very excited about working with his brother and I think that bringing on a guy of Greg’s knowledge of pitching will only be good for the Rangers organization.
Thad Levine – The Astro’s have asked and received permission to interview Levine for the opening they have for general manager. In case you do not follow the Rangers front office, Thad has been Jon Daniels right hand man for the past 6 years, acting as the assistant general manager for that time. He is a very brilliant front office and baseball guy, but we all knew it was only a matte of time before he would get the job of general manager somewhere else in baseball. Also up for the position is Rays general manager Andrew Friedman. There is also a possibility that the Astros could also ask to interview A.J. Preller, the Rangers’ director of player personnel, but they have not yet. Maybe Thad will decide to stay with the Rangers, but either way he will be gone in the next few years. He has had too much sucess to be ignored!
Johnny Narron – Narron has been hired by the Milwaukee Brewers to be their hitting coach. Narron has been the assistant hitting coach in Texas for the past 4 seasons, but most notably he was Josh Hamilton’s accountability coach, helping Josh during his recovery of drug and alcohol abuse that plagued him for many years.
“Johnny is very talented and has helped me tremendously, both personally and professionally,” Hamilton said. “He is fulfilling a dream to be a Major League batting coach and I have told him previously I would never stand in his way from doing that. We will stay in touch and I wish him great success with the Brewers.” (texasrangers.com) This is another in a line of Rangers coaches and personal that has left in the past few weeks (Rangers also lost minor league scout Scott Servais to the Angels). What this means for Josh Hamilton is yet to be seen, but I think he will be fine, and I do not think that this move means the Rangers are not going to re-sign him. I think they have great interest in keeping him in a Rangers uniform.
C.J. Wilson – CJ’s agent has said that CJ will most likely make a decision on where he will pitch next season during the winter meetings coming up in a few weeks. I personally do not think he will sign with Texas, I think he is going to sign with a team that no one sees coming like the Dodgers, Padres, Phillies, Cardinals. Either that or he will wind up with the Angels. That is just my gut feeling, I have no proof.
