Who Should Play First For Texas?

Mitch Moreland had a great World Series in 2010, there is no doubt about that, but is that enough for him to have earned the starting job for 2011? I believe it is, but I think that the Rangers have 3 options to look at going into 2011 at first base. The 1st would be for Moreland to have a great spring and prove to everyone once and for all that he is the guy to take the position into the future and be that guy. Mitch’s defense is good, but not great, and he needs to show a little more pop at the plate next season. I think that it is Mitch’s job to win or lose in spring training.

Option no.2, which has been talked about a whole lot this offseason, is Michael Young. Mike is going to be the DH/utility guy to start the season, unless Moreland stinks it up. But, being the utility guy means that he is going to learn to play first.  He is still a good fielder, just not a great one, and I think that he would be good at first. I think that the Rangers will really give a lot of consideration to playing Michael there more and having Mitch DH and play some outfield too.

Option no. 3 is a guy that some people have forgotten about, Chris Davis. If Chris can have a monster spring and Mitch struggles, look for Davis to get one more look at the major league level. But, as I see it, if Moreland has a great spring, look for Davis to be on the move to get a fresh start with another organization. I think that Chris had his opportunity, and he may have lost it. I would like to see him stay, if for nothing else he is from Longview, Texas, but also he is a great defender. Maybe has the chance to be one of the best defensive first baseman in a long time, if he can just get his adjustments at the plate and start hitting.

So my first base order is:

Mitch Moreland has to lose it

The Rangers will sign a DH if they want Micheal to play there

   Chris has one more chance.

Thanks for reading. Be sure to check back often for more.
