Spring Training Preview: Starting Pitching – Yu Darvish

Okay, we all know Yu Darvish is supposed to be the Rangers savior, right?Everyone has written, talked, and some have even sung about him.  He is supposed to come into Texas and get 25 wins, strikeout 300, and walk 3. Well, that is not going to happen, and I think if we are counting on Darvish to be the Rangers best pitcher in 2012, we will be sorely disappointed. Now don’t get me wrong, I am very excited about having Darvish here in Texas, but there is a reason that I am projecting him as the number three starter going into spring training. As previously discussed, Lewis has earned the number one spot, and I truly believe that Holland will be the number 2 starter.

Darvish is going to have number one stuff one year, but I do not think it will be at the beginning of the 2012 season. As we all know, his numbers in Japan are indisputably great. In 5 seasons with the Nippon Ham Fighters, Darvish had a ERA of 1.72, he struck out 1083 while walking  just  221. The one that gets me though is that he has 50 complete games in 5 seasons. Also, he only gave up 39 home-runs. Everyone national keeps saying that he is just the next Dice-K, but I do not buy it. No Japanese pitcher that has come to play in America has ever put up those type of numbers. So how will it translate to major league baseball? Well here is what I think. Darvish’s 2012 season will look something like this. 13 wins, ERA of 3,39, 175 strikeouts, 28 walks. If Darvish can be that good, the Rangers have made a great pickup, and they have a really good number 3 pitcher, and probably a future ace. I look forward to seeing how that works out in 2012.
