The Rangers this morning inked left handed pitcher Derek Holland to a shiny new 5 year contract worth around $28 million for the next 5 years with club options for the two years following that. If he gets both club options, he will earn a reported $50 million. This, in my opinion, is a great deal for the Rangers and a good deal for Derek Holland as well. It seems to be a win win for both the team and the pitcher. That means that Derek could now be a Ranger until at least 2019, and since his is one of my favorite Rangers and a guy that I have interviewed on several occasions, I am very excited to see that. Derek had a great season in 2011, and after the all star break he won 10 games with an ERA under 3. The kind of stuff you would expect to see from your no. 1 starter. Derek will go into the season as the no. 2 guy, according to the spring training schedule. I am very happy for Derek.
Nolan Ryan today on Norm Hitzges Dallas Radio show on am 1310 the ticket said that he would not be surprised if Josh’s agent came through spring training at some point and the discussions on Johs’s contract continued. “We’re open to talking to them if they want to pursue that. But it would be done here towards the end of spring training if we’re going to do it because we don’t like to carry on negotiations during the season. We feel like that’s a distraction and it’s not fair to the player or the organization.” Ryan said. Stay tuned to the Ranger Report for more on the Hamilton situation.
