Another big possibility for the fifth starter spot is Justin Grimm. Grimm had not pitched above the AA level before he was suddenly called up last season to make a spot start for the Rangers. He did an admirable job, but did not look so well in his second start. Justin is another young option for the Rangers (are you starting to see a pattern here?) who has some major league experience but is not fully polished yet. The Rangers plan on making the spot a real competition, so it is wide open for Grimm and the others.
Grimm had a astronomical ERA of 9.00 at the major league level last season, but that was in a very short sample, and he only started twice. He pitched in a total of fourteen innings. Justin has a fastball/changeup/curveball that he uses and his fastball is generally in the low 90’s (although it can hit 95-96 according to Lone Star Ball). Justin has a great shot at getting this, and I would rank him as my number two opportunity to take the spot behind Perez.
