The old adage in sports is that you can’t win them all, and as we all found out yesterday that still holds true. Derek Holland came out and pitched a great game against the Rays, only giving up two runs, but his offense lacking the bats of Lance Berkman and A. J. Pierzynski could not get it done at all. And we all know that guys need days off here and there, so I can live with that. One thing I questioned during the game though is why did Ron Washington decide to pinch hit with Leyons Martin in a key situation late in the game instead of the Big Puma? Lance is built for situations like that. Again, I am not a major league manager and would probably be an awful one if I tried, but I just didn’t get that move.
Regardless of yesterday’s game, the Rangers are still off to a hot start to the 2013 season, having a record of six and three through the first nine games and pitching very well. The rangers now move on to a long road trip which starts tonight in Seattle for four games and then moves to Chicago to play the Cubs. Side rant here: I don’t like the new inter league set-up. I always enjoyed inter league play the way it has been for a long while and I think (as well as some of my friends and colleagues) that the All-Star game should be the last inter league game of the season. You just can’t have division races going down to the Rays playing the Red Sox while the Yankees are squaring off against the Pirates in late September (no offense to the Pirates). Okay, I am done ranting. The Mariners just lost a few to the Astros and so they are going to come out this weekend ready to play ball in my opinion. Tonight Justin Grimm Has the difficult task of taking on the Mariners while they have King Felix going for them. I really don’t like when we get him right off the bat. There are a lot of pitchers that I respect and fear, but not many as much as King Felix. If he is on, the game is not usually worth watching as a Rangers fan. All Justin needs to do tonight is give up 3 runs or more and I will feel pretty hopeless. That is a lot to hang on the kid. The good news is that it is a four game series so we have time to make up for it if Felix is on tonight.
Nolan Ryan released a statement last night saying that he will be staying as the Rangers CEO, and the entire state of Texas breathed a collective sigh of relief. A big, collective sigh of relief. As Rangers fans and just fans of all things Texas, it would have been and felt awful around here if the Ryan Express moved on somewhere else. So Rangers fans everywhere are saying a prayer of thanksgiving this morning about Nolan staying. Enjoy some West Coast Baseball tonight y’all.
I’m just thankful Nolan is still around…he’s doing A LOT for Texas baseball…just by sitting over by the dugout. A great Legend…
