The Texas Rangers are not winning games at a very high rate at the moment, which shouldn’t really come as a surprise with all of the injuries they are dealing with. With youth comes excitement, but also with youth comes inexperience. That inexperience showed through last night in the Texas Rangers loss to the Miami Marlins.
Ron Washington is a man that prides himself on doing the little things that help his team win, and when in comes to fielding, the Texas Rangers are doing none of that right now. They have the third most errors in the American League with 47, the have the third worse fielding percentage in the American League at .980, and they are dead last in the American League in defensive efficiency at .659. On the flip side, Oakland in first in defensive efficiency, even though they themselves have 46 errors.
The Texas Rangers are now 8 games back of the West leading Athletics, but an even more disturbing stat is the fact that the Houston Astros are now only 2.5 games behind the Texas Rangers. The so called “laughable” Houston Astros are 5-4 in June so far, while the Texas Rangers are 3-6 so far in June. And the Astros have only committed 42 errors on the season. The way it looks right now, instead of battling for a division championship this season, the Texas Rangers will be trying to stay ahead of the other Texas franchise. Now where any of us thought they would be when spring training started.
So how can the Texas Rangers set the ship right? More time. Players like Rougned Odor, Luis Sardinas, Brad Snyder, Robinson Chirinos, Michael Choice and Leonys Martin are all very young and inexperienced. The Texas Rangers are going to have to be paitent with this young team, and so are the fans. If this season is not a lost cause, it is dangerously close to one. It is time to let the youngsters take their lumps and gain the valuable experience that guys like Derek Holland, Elvis Andrus, Ian Kinsler, Mitch Moreland and others did during the late 2000’s. So sit back and enjoy the show, but remember, the show is not the same as it was from 2010-2013, now it is growing for the future. I am afraid the now has passed the Texas Rangers by.
