Help Is Coming but When?

Joey Gallo and Alex Gonzalez are on a fast track to the majors as both were promoted this week to Double A Frisco. Their debut performances were just the same as class A ball. When you combine that future with the maturity of Nick Tepesch, Odor, Martin, Scott Baker, Neal Martinez, and Michael Choice there is reason to be exited about the future.

The problem with the future is predicting when that will happen. John Daniels has traded so much prime talent away in recent years to win now that it makes you wonder. Let’s not beat that up again. Instead consider that Profar will return too, Holland will be back if they allow him time to heal properly. Perez most likely will not be back to full strength until 2016.

What this means is that the Rangers have hope with 7-8 guys that should impact the major league rosters in a couple of years. In fact, I would guess that as much as I personally like Alex Rios his trade value is just too much not to stockpile some more players. Plus, he is a free agent after the year so theoretically he could be re-signed. The only real negative I see is Prince Fielder, that huge contract is going to hang over the team like the plague if he can’t recover, and the neck is a tough thing to overcome.

The bottom line is that 2016 is when I see this teams next best shot at making a run. Holland, Harrison (if he ever returns but he is probably done), and even Yu will all be thinking about contract extensions. You will also have a huge crop of these young guys trying to play for their first real contracts. That motivation and a jelling of the team should start to see results.

Sadly, we have to just enjoy the maturity process this year, and see improvement next before we start seeing these results. Rangers fans need to enjoy the ride, and remember when because the good days can return, and they have great potential to return. You just can’t magically transform a team this beat up overnight, and there are just too many guys that will never return to form. It is rebuilding time in Texas, and you only have to look a little south to see how much better Houston is this year to see the hope.
