So, the Texas Rangers are currently getting their collective cans kicked by the former last place Houston Astros. Houston is now only one game behind the Rangers in the standings, which is depressing. So why are the Texas Rangers so bad right now? Inexperience.
The Texas Rangers are last in ERA with 4.79, last in Earned Runs Allowed at 419, last in total runs allowed at 458, last in hits allowed with 877, second to last in home runs at 93, they have walked the third most people and they only have 17 saves. Those number are not overwhelming to be sure. Here is a list of who has started for the Texas Rangers so far in 2014:
Yu Darvish – the Ace who has struggled from time to time.
Colby Lewis – coming off of hip surgery, is astounding what he is doing.
Martin Perez – great start to the season, went down to Tommy John Surgery
Tanner Scheppers – not good as a starter at all, injured.
Robbie Ross – ineffective as a starter, ineffective as a reliever, sent down.
Joe Saunders – Kicked off the team for being dreadful.
Scott Baker – a couple of spot starts, not that great.
Nick Martinez – should be pitching at AA ball, got injured taking batting practice.
Matt Harrison – possibly done for his career.
Miles Mikolas – one good start, one “wow that was rough” start.
Phil Irwin – got his first ever major league start last night.
That is eleven guys to fill 5 spots. More of them are young and inexperienced then not. So why are the Texas Rangers losing? Becuase they don’t have the pitching to stay in games. I didn’t even talk about the pen, we will save that for another post. Hopefully they can take on from the Astros tonight. I hope.
