Texas Rangers catcher Geovany Soto made it back to the majors after an injury that kept him out for the entire first half of the season. Geovany Soto also got busted for marijuana a few days before returning to the Texas Rangers. They had been holding down the fort, so to speak, with Robinson Chirinos and Chris Gimenez, who have been doing a pretty good job in my opinion.
Geovany Soto caught Yu Darvish on Friday night, and it went very well. He caught three of the four games between Friday and Monday, and then Monday he had to leave the game early with a groin injury, and, you guessed it, he is back on the disabled list.
He is only on the 15 day disabled list right now, but my guess is that it is going to be a longer stay again. A groin on a catcher can never be a good thing, and Geovany Soto is a guy that had just made it back and probably was not in the best shape of his life starting his season. I would figure on the tandem of Gimenez and Chirinos to finish out the season.
The only major question I have is can Darvish feel as comfortable with those two as he seems to with Geovany Soto? Only time will tell, but I think we may have seen the last of Geovany Soto in a Texas Rangers uniform.
