Evan Grant, a beat writer for the Dallas Morning News is reporting that Michael Young declined to interview for the managers position with the Rangers. However, according to Grant, Young’s discussion with Daniels moved into broader terms in a continued ongoing role with the organization.
Some of you may remember that when Nolan Ryan retired at age 46, he had a personal services contract with the Rangers for several years. This is a very common practice as it typically gives the front office a view from the players perspective. It also, has a small effect on the field because current players see former players who were with the organization return and it builds credibility.
I have brought up the credibility issue several times since Nolan left in the spring. Bringing back Young immediately gives the Rangers clout with players, because it was just not that long ago he was in the dug out with them. It was perceived that when Young left it was under poor terms with Daniels. Apparently, that is not the case or I really don’t believe you try to go back to work for someone you don’t like. I would imagine Young has plenty of money, not that anyone turns down more, but this is about staying connected to the game for him, and presents a win/win for both sides. Besides Michael is only age 38, and how much kids soccer can a player enjoy?
In all professional sports every GM has to face the issue of an aging expensive player that is loved by fans, but is clearly way past their prime. Young had to know that, and he did his best to perform but it just wasn’t there his last year in Philadelphia.
For Rangers fans this is super news, because it shows that Daniels is clearly thinking big picture, and he is smart enough to know that the guy who was a clubhouse leader and fan favorite has something still to offer the franchise.
I sure hope this works out, as it also appears that Darren Oliver is going to join Michael Young. When you add that with the Fox Sport team that now includes Mark McLamore, and Pudge Rodriguez, I think the organization has a clear grasp that having some ex-players that were very good around is just good for everyone. It sells tickets, and makes players want to stay in Arlington.
So let’s give JD a pat on the back for this one if it all works out, because to me this is great news for organizational credibility!
