The Texas Rangers have now played 1 full week of spring training games in Arizona, so where do they stand so far? Lets take a look at the good and the bad from week 1 of Spring Training.
Starting Pitching. The Rangers threw out a bunch of guys this past week who are all fighting for spots in the rotation. As we all know, no. 1 and no. 2 are CJ ( 5 innings pitched, ERA of 7.20) and Colby 5.0 innings pitched, ERA of 3.60). So, how did the potential 3-5 stack up. Here are the week 1 numbers:
Tommy Hunter – 2 IP, 0.00 ERA
Derek Holland – 2 IP, 4.50 ERA
Matt Harrison – 5 IP, 1.80 ERA
Michael Kirkman – 5 IP, 5.40 ERA
Neftali Feliz- 2.1 IP, 0.00 ERA
Dave Bush – 5.0 IP, 1.80 ERA
Alexi Ogando – 2.0 IP, 9.00 ERA
So, since it has only been one week, the numbers do not mean that much. When guys start having 12 – 15 innings, that is when I really start paying attention to the numbers. for now, I take the good with the bad as far as pitching is concerned. If I had to pick right now my rotation would look like this:
1. CJ Wilson 2. Colby Lewis 3. Tommy Hunter 4. Derek Holland 5. Matt Harrison. That rotation would worry me a little bit after Tommy Hunter. Matt has never seemed to put it together for a long period of time and Derek has been very streaky so far in his career. Lets look at batting now:
Here are the starters and the leaders, in the order of at bats:
Chris Davis – 19 AB, .421 avg, 2 HR and 8 rbi. I do not think that Chris will make the team and I think that at some point he will get a fresh start somewhere else. He is a great talent and he is from my neck of the woods and I will be sad to see him go, but go I think he will.
Mitch Moreland – 17 AB, .412 avg, 2 HR and 6 rbi. Mitch will be the Rangers everyday first baseman for at least the first month of the season. They will see how he does and re-evaluate after that.
Elvis Andrus – 16 AB, .125 avg, 0 HR and 1 rbi. 0 stolen bases.
Julio Borbon – 16 AB, .500, 0 HR and 1 rbi. 2 stolen bases.
Nelson Cruz – 16 AB, .250, 0 HR and 1 rbi.
Josh Hamilton – 16 AB, .250, 0 HR and 0 rbi.
David Murphy – 16 AB, .250, 1, 4
Ian Kinsler – 14 AB, .500, 4, 7
Michael Young – 14 AB, .571, 0, 4
Mike Napoli – 11 AB, .455, 1, 3
Torrealba has only had 3 ab’s so far, so that is why I put Napoli there instead. Good numbers for some guys so far and bad for others. Like I said about pitching, I am not too worried about it yet. Looking forward to week 2.
