The Texas Rangers traded Ian Kinsler, one of the fan favorites last season, to bring in Prince Fielder, a first baseman who was supposed to knock the cover off the ball here in Texas. In his first season as a Texas Ranger, Prince Fielder did not do that and then missed most of the season with a neck injury. So the fact that he was not his long ball hitting self was not much of a surprise.
Then, 2015 rolled around, and Prince was healthy, and he was hitting the ball very, very well, but not hitting it very far. He had a good April, a great May, a good June, and he started declining again in July. Over the past seven days, Prince is sporting a slash line of .143/.280/.143 with only three hits compared to five strikeouts. He has looked terrible in the last week, and for the last 28 days or so he is hitting just .243. So what is wrong with Prince Fielder?
Prince Fielder is still getting on base, but he just isn’t hitting the long ball like we all thought he would, and I am not sure that he is that guy anymore. I sure hope that I am wrong about that. He is still hitting .326 on the season, he is still working walks (39 this season), he is hitting some home runs (15 so far), but he is not that 35 plus home run guy anymore.
Prince Fielder can still be a productive hitter for the Texas Rangers, now playing primarily DH. He can still be a team player, he can still drive in runs and hit for average, and maybe he will get back to knocking the cover off the ball, but I think we are seeing the new Prince Fielder, the one that no longer has the power to smoke the ball our of the park with any consistency. If I could actuallt answer that question, I would probably work for the Texas Rangers instead of blogging about them!
