The old cliche is “Houston, we have a problem”. The Astros came into this series with the Texas Rangers having won 11 of their last 13 games, and they had climbed all the way back into third place in the American League West. Then, Arlington happened. Again. To say that the Astros are struggling against the Rangers would be an understatement. They have lost all eight matchups with the Rangers so far in 2016, and the last time the Astros beat the Rangers was September 27, 2015. The last time they beat the Rangers in Arlington? April 12, 2015.
So what is it about the Texas Rangers that the Astros just cannot solve? I’m not sure, but as the old adage from the Rangers former manager used to say, “That’s the way baseball go”. I am not going to sit here and tell you that the Texas Rangers are going to sweep the season series with the Astros, that would be an amazing feat, but i am telling you that there is something about Arlington that causes the Astros to fall apart. Baseball is a very mental game, and I think that Globe Life Park has gotten into the Astros heads.
Houston is 28-24 against the rest of the major leagues, but 0-8 against the Rangers. They are four games over .500 against the rest of baseball. Pretty amazing. Of course the Astros did not do themselves any favors when pitcher Ken Giles said this about the two teams:
“We have more talent than this team does. … We’re going to go out there tomorrow and just put them to the ground.” texasrangers.com
The Rangers immediately used Giles quote as motivation to win their eighth straight against the Astros last night. If the Astros can’t find a way to break through against the Rangers, words are not going to mean much. The Rangers and Astros face off again tonight, with Yu Darvish going for the Rangers and Doug Fister going for the ‘stros. First pitch is 7:05.
