The draft is beginning today, and although it is not quite the same as the NFL Draft, it is still a big deal for teams in baseball. The problem with the MLB draft is that fans will not see the player for several years, even if he is a sure fire pick. The projected no. 1 pick in this years draft is a left handed pitcher named A. J. Puk from Florida, and the Phillies have that pick. Puk is a beast at 6 foot 7 inches, has a fastball that reaches mid 90’s and has a 3.21 ERA. But enough about non Rangers picks!

When the Rangers signed Ian Desmond, they gave up the 19th overall pick to do so, and I would say he has been worth it so far, so that means the Rangers don’t get a pick until number 30 which is in round 2. With that being said, the Texas Rangers may have a pair of pretty good outfielders to choose from, one being Buddy Reed, and the other being Taylor Trammell.
Texas drafted Reed in 2013, but he chose not to sign. The Florida junior is a switch hitter with plus speed and has the ability to play center field. Reed is very athletic and is a great overall athlete, but the one knock on him is at the plate. He has been very inconsistent and has hit much worse from the left side, he will need work on his approach. He did have a batting average of .305 his most recent season.
Taylor Trammell is more of a work in progress, as a two sport athlete in high school. Trammell has above average speed, but he has trouble recognizing off speed pitches. He would take a longer time to get to the majors because of that. He is another prospect who could play center, and he needs to work on arm strength.
Now of course this is all conjecture, and it could be one of many other guys, but the Texas Rangers have made it pretty clear that they plan on picking the best player available at that slot. I will tell you who that is later after the pick has been made!
