The Texas Rangers starters for most of July have not given the team a chance to win. In fact, they have been the reason for most of the losses. The starters have an ERA of over 8, as a team their ERA is 6.20. Since being swept by the Angels, the Rangers are 3-2 and have not been blown out. Something they were doing a lot of in July.
The defense has also been bad. The Rangers had 3 errors in one inning the other night. Never acceptable. The Rangers have 64 errors. That ties them for second worst with the Angels. They also have a fielding percentage of .983, fourth worst in the AL. Not giving their team a chance to win.
Nick Martinez, although not fantastic, gave his team a chance to win last night. Something he had not done i a while. Yu Darvish, Cole Hamels, AJ Griffin, and Martin Perez also gave their team a chance to win in their last starts. In the last 28 days, the Rangers ERA is 5.96. In the last seven days however, the ERA drops to 3.07.
All fans can ask for is that their starters give the team a chance to win. The Rangers are coming off of a tough road trip, and they play a majority of their remaining games in Arlington. They play more losing teams than winning teams. The Astros, however, have a tougher schedule. And the Rangers and Astros still have nine games left to play between them.
The division will be won or lost in the next few months. If the Rangers pitchers can just give the team a chance to win, I believe that they will take the West and make it back to the post season. They need to take the series today behind Darvish and then take the four game series against the Royals. Trade or no trade, the Rangers are set up to win the division.
