Trade rumors are fun. There are plenty of them out there about the Texas Rangers. Will they acquire Chris Sale, or Rich Hill, Or Chris Archer? Will they get Jake Odorizzi, or Matt Moore? Edinson Volquez or Andrew Cashner? Jeremy Hellickson? No one knows at this point. But I suggest to you that the Rangers, although they could use another starter, could still win the division without one.
You may think I am crazy, but they are pitching better. Their problem of late has been errors on defense and no timely hitting. Think about it. The Rangers lost nine games in July were they scored at least 4 runs, in seven of those they scored five runs. Five runs should be enough to win a MLB game on most occasions. After a great June, they had a bad July.
In the last 4 games, that bad July seems to be fading. The Rangers have won 3 of their last 4. They have pitched well, even in the loss last night. If they can get good pitching from Yu Darvish, Cole Hamels, AJ Griffin, and decent pitching from Martin Perez and the fifth starter, they should win games.
Now the good pitchers will still lose some, and the bad ones will be bad. But just be serviceable for now. The Rangers tighten up the defense, and all of a sudden they are back to winning games again. The team has allowed 38 un-earned runs this season.
Would I like some help? Of course, but I do not feel like that is the only way the Rangers can win. Tighten up defense, hit with runners in scoring position. This team is still a first place team. No need to panic. Let’s enjoy the last two months of the season.
