The starting pitcher market seems to expensive. Chris Sale may be a little crazy anyway. Lots of teams would still take him. The Texas Rangers seem to be looking to improve the pitching by catching. Not a bad plan. When they couldn’t keep Cliff Lee in 2011, they added Adrian Beltre. That seemed to work out pretty well.
I think that adding Jonathan Lucroy would be a great idea. He is a great major league catcher, and is controllable after this season. The Rangers are also looking to get a reliever as well, either Tyler Thornburg or Jeremy Jeffress, according to Jeff Wilson. The Rangers have stated that they will not give up Joey Gallo unless they get an impact player in return.
I would give up Gallo for Jonathan Lucroy, especially if a good reliever came with him. The Rangers have a lot if talent in AA and AAA ball that could go as well. I think that Lucroy would impact the pitching staff. He has a great reputation as a good defensive catcher. I may even be willing to part with Gallo and Lewis Brinson, although I wouldn’t want to.
The bottom line is, can this team make the World Series as is? They will get Colby Lewis and Derek Holland back before the post season. Lucas Harrell looked better than Nick Martinez and Chi Chi Gonzalez in his debut. While I like Robinson Chirinos, Bobby Wilson and Brian Holaday, Jonathan Lucroy would be an upgrade to all three of them.
Today is the day we find out. How much do the Rangers value Jonathan Lucroy? How much do the Rangers value Joey Gallo? It will be fun to watch as it all unfolds. I will post more as it happens or doesn’t happen.
