I would like to take a minute and talk about who I think the future of the Rangers pitching staff could be. Derrek Holland. Now I know alot of people look at the off year that Holland had last year and throw him to the wind. However I would just like to go over some numbers. Derrek Holland is 24 yrs old. His highest ERA is 6.12 for 2009 his rookie season in which he pitched 33 games. With 183 innings pitched in 2009, he only gave up 4HRS I would say thats pretty good. Now as we all know we had a rough start and finish in 2009, so I don’t fully blame this rookie for not doing so well in the win collum. (8-13) (W-L) This was a year that was still in the making. Had Derrek Holland come out in 2010 for more that just a few appearances I think he could have done great things. However the truth is, we really did not need him. As sad as that sounds it was true. We had alot of pitchers last year that were able to do great things and if was gonna play he would have had to be able to do amazing things.
Now with that said, I am a huge fan. I will state the facts, but when it comes down to the song and dance, I will tell you he is my favorite Ranger pitcher. A lot of people would say I am a retard. Or I don’t know what I am talking about, but I would just say one word that I think is something that most of the other pitchers are not…”Teachable”!!! Not every pitcher takes all the advice they can get, but Holland does. He realizes that his spot in the rotation this year will resolve to wether or not he can perform under pressure and be willing to learn how to adapt better to the ML level.
Though he is not the best pitcher on the team by far, I think with a solid full season under his belt, he could be. I think that if he continues to pitch well out of spring training, that his arm will get stronger and his control will get tighter, and his head will no longer be unsettled. He could will be on the mound in Texas for a long time. He has shown us all that he can pitch a full game, he can be really great under pressure, he showed us that on his virgin outing, and he has a great fast ball. I am not sayin he is the best yet, but I think out of all the pitchers the Rangers have on their major league staff, he has the most potential of being great and could provide a solid foundation if groomed and well fed…figuratively speaking of course.
