The Texas Rangers, in what can only be described as a very oddly umpired game, defeated the Angels last night to drop the magic number to four. Later, Seattle lost, meaning the magic number has now dropped to three. There are eleven games left in the Rangers season.
Three is a pretty good magic number, especially with only eleven games to go. The Rangers have the Angels, Brewers, Athletics and Rays left in the season. They should be able to win the majority of those games. I am looking at a record of somewhere in the vicinity of 95-67.
It is almost a done deal that the Rangers will win the West. The Mariners and Astros are 9.5 games behind with only 11 to go. Hard to make that up. So now the question is who else will make the post season? Lets look at the rest of the AL, and look at the Rangers potential first round opponent.
It looks like Boston, Cleveland and Texas will win their divisions. The wild card gets a little more interesting than the division races, and it looks like the Rangers will be the first seed. Right now Baltimore and Toronto have the two wild card spots, but Detroit, Houston, Seattle, New York and Kansas City all still have legitimate shots. If I had to guess, I would say it will be Baltimore and Toronto, with Toronto winning the Wild Card game. That would mean that Texas would face off against Toronto for the second year in a row. We all remember how that went last season, and of course the punch this season. The MLB would like nothing better than to see those two clubs square off.
Should be an interesting eleven days. I expect the number to not stay three for long. The Rangers could be division champions as early as tomorrow!
