The Rangers Thursday gave general manager Jon Daniels an extension. You read that right. He is now here for at least another two to three years. After the extension, he told reporters that the Rangers will not be a winning franchise until at least 2020. He also would not use the work rebuild.
“I definitely believe that when we open this new ballpark, we’re going to have an exciting young team that is going to play a brand of baseball our fans are really going to like.” per Jeff Wilson
Rangers fans should get used to not winning. My opinion? Jon Daniels had help when he won. Nolan Ryan was in the front office in the World Series years. Now he is in Houston. I don’t have to tell you what they did last season. Again in my opinion, he has not made a good trade in a while. He gave up the farm for some guys that ultimately did not help. Hindsight is always 20/20, but I didn’t like many of the last few trades.
At the end of the 2018 season (at the least) the Rangers will lose Adrian Beltre, Cole Hamels, and almost all of their starters. The minors aren’t looking fantastic either. Round Rock is okay. Frisco is terrible. The only way to rebuild the farm is to trade. They would have to give up the likes of Adrian Beltre, Cole Hamels, Elvis Andrus, Joey Gallo, Shin-Soo Choo, Nomar Mazara and more to rebuild in ant significant way.
I don’t understand the extension. I probably never will. The Rangers ownership thinks it is the right move. Only time will tell if it was or not.
