The Texas Rangers gave a minor league deal with an invitation to major league camp to four pitchers. Jeanmar Gomez, Phillips Valdez, Ariel Hernandez and . Two of these pitchers have no major league experience, two of them do.
Del Pozo, a left handed pitcher, has been with the Marlins his whole career. in 2018 he had an ERA of 3.97 for the Marlins AA affiliate. He was used as a reliever. Phillips Valdez also has no major league experience. He is a right handed reliever who has spent his career with the Washington Nationals. He had a 2.73 ERA in 2018, and he went from AA to AAA. Both have a chance to see the majors in 2019.
Gomez is a right handed pitcher who spent some time in the majors during the last 5 plus seasons. In the majors, he has a career ERA of 4.40 in over 500 major league innings. He has not been as good over the last few seasons (ERA 5.96 over the past two seasons). Hernandez, also a right handed pitcher who spent all of 2018 in the minor leagues after posting a 5.18 ERA in 2017. He jumped around to several different teams in 2018.
None of these pick ups are news worthy by themselves, but it is obvious that the Texas Rangers are trying to improve and see what can stick. You never know when a guy is going to figure it out and become much better than anyone projected. Once thing we can’t say about the Rangers is that they are not being quiet. They are just not going to make any blockbuster deals either.
