The trade deadline came and went on Wednesday. The Rangers stayed quiet during the whole thing. Chris Martin for Kolby Allard was about it. Hunter Pence, Mike Minor, Jesse Chavez, Danny Santana and others are still Rangers. Texas decided to stand pat, which I actually do not have a problem with.
Minor won his game on Wednesday night, and after it ended, some interesting news broke. Asdrubal Cabrera and Tim Federowicz are going to be designated for assignment. According to multiple sources on Twitter, the Rangers will bring up Isiah Kiner-Falefa to play third, and highly touted prospect Jose Trevino to back up at catcher.
IKF was catching earlier in the season. Now he will take over at third. He played some third in 2018 and was not bad at all. Trevino is intriguing. He was fun to watch in the minors. He should be fun in the majors.
The Rangers have made their choice. Younger and less experienced, but possibly more fun will be the way forward. Don’t be surprised to see more veterans designated or given less playing time in the coming months. The clear goal at this point seems to be preparing for the 2020 season. New ballpark, young players, and hopefully decent pitching and they may be better than anyone expects in 2020.
