Replacing Adrian Beltre was never going to be an easy task. In 2019 the Rangers tried Asdrubal Cabrera, and he would up getting cut from the team. Everyone wondered if the Rangers would go after a big name free agent now that they are moving into Globe Life Field. While they kicked the tires of a few, they would up with Todd Frazier.
Things could have been worse. Frazier was an all-star with the Reds in 2014. He is a solid third baseman who has had a good career. The Rangers signed him to a one year deal worth around $5 million. Potentially, Nick Solak could win the job, although he would really have to impress to take the place of Frazier.
Frazier has a career .243 average. In 2019 he hit .251 with 21 home runs and 67 RBI for the Mets. He committed 12 errors in 112 games at the hot corner. He is not going to be another Adrian Beltre, but he should be pretty serviceable at third. It is usually a good decision to bring in a vet to help develop young talent. Hopefully Frazier will help develop Solak and help him become the future third baseman for the club.
Overall, while the Frazier signing doesn’t wow any one, it is a solid signing in my opinion.
