Todd Frazier is here. On a one year contract. It’s pretty obvious to me that he is here to play third base. Isiah Kiner-Falefa played a pretty good third base when Adrian Beltre was out with injuries a few season back. Danny Santana can also play some third base. So why did the Rangers go out and get Todd Frazier?
Simple explanation? They felt like they needed a veteran prescience at third. Elvis Andrus is the team leader, for sure. Frazier brings a ton of experience and will help players like Kiner-Falefa and Nick Solak grow as major league players. Todd played 120 games at third in 2019 for the Mets. His WAR was 2.2. He has been in the majors since 2011.
My personal opinion is that the Rangers feel like they brought some players to the majors to early in the past few seasons. They do not want to make that mistake again with Solak and other infielders whom they don’t see as ready. this could turn out to be an Asdrubal Cabrera situation where he is gone mid-season and a prospect is ready to be the everyday third baseman. He could also have a great season and surprise everyone. That is yet to be seen.
Whether you like it or not, Frazier will be the starting third baseman on opening day at Globe Life Field. I personally hope he has a very nice season and helps the Rangers finish the season over the .500 mark for the first time since 2017.
