First off, I was very glad to see that the Rangers avoided arbitration with David Murphy by giving him a contract. It is reportedly worth $2.4 million for one year, and Murphy is worth it. He was a crucial part of the outfield last season with both Cruz and Hamilton being injured for part of the season and with Borbon struggling as well. I dare say, the Rangers record would not have been as good without David Murphy last season, and I am happy that he is staying around.
The Rangers have sign and invited to spring training left-handed pitcher Zach Jackson to a Minor League contract. Jackson spent last season at Triple-A Las Vegas, where he was 2-3 with a 5.64 ERA in five starts and 30 relief appearances. I do not forsee him being on the major league roster on opening day.
I saw a question on Twitter the other day that made me think. World Series, if they make it? How will they get him playing time? I though about this for a little while after I read the question, and I think I have come up with the answer. If Mitch Moreland does not turn into a on year wonder (like one of my favorite Rangers Chris Davis did), and if Kinsler stays healthy (which he has not for a whole season yet), then I see Mike platooning between 1st base, 2nd base, 3rd base and pinch hitter. Moreland can play some outfield, and is pretty good at it, Kinsler and Beltre would be good assets coming off the bench, and so would Mike for what it is worth. Mike is such an unselfish guy, I think he will do what ever it takes to get his team back to the World Series. Just like Murphy in 2010, I think Mike will get more playing time than anyone thinks he will right now. Things always happen during the course of a season that influence the outcome of playing time for one player or another.
