Next in our series of predictions sure to be wrong is catcher and DH. To recap we have done the starting rotation, followed by the bullpen. We hit the infield next and now we are on to the next. As spring training moves on, we will do more of these as they will probably change week to week. Hopefully you all enjoy our predictions and enjoy looking back to see how far off we are.
Catcher
Jose Trevino will be the opening day catcher. I have little doubt about that. I also think that Jonah Heim is going to make the team and get significant playing time behind the dish. These two men will share the responsibility evenly if you ask me. One will not get much more playing time then the other unless a player begins to pull away at the plate. Platoon is the word I would use. Also, don’t count out Drew Butera. There is a chance that he can edge out Heim even though I don’t think he will. Look for a shared catcher in 2021 with Sam Huff coming into the picture at some point later in the season.
Designated Hitter
How much does Khris Davis have left in the tank? What will his strikeout numbers be? Questions that will need to be answered as the season progresses, but cannot be answered before. There are two possibilities at this position: Davis tears it up and Calhoun is a backup dh/of off the bench. The other is that Calhoun tears it up and Davis is traded or comes off the bench. Strikeouts is what I believe it will come down to. If Davis and Joey Gallo are both striking out a significant amount, it will be hard to keep them both in the lineup.
Others will get the chance to play here from time to time, but it will mostly be one of the two. The hope is that Calhoun can grab the bull by the horns and be the hitter the Rangers hope he would be when they traded for him. Obviously, only time will tell. This should be a friendly competition, but we all know that Davis is a one and done guy with Texas. Calhoun will hopefully be here for a while.
