The Rangers offense looked great but couldn’t find a way to win the first few games of the season. They were putting up great offensive numbers. Pitching really let them down in the first five games. San Diego came to town this past weekend, and the Rangers have a bad recent history with that franchise. That did not change.
Offensive Offense
Rangers hits were at a premium over the series with the Padres. Friday the Rangers were no hit. Saturday they blew a 3-0 lead and lost 7-4. Sunday they again could not get a player across the plate in a 3-0 loss. Four runs in three games. That will not win a lot of series. Being a young team means that the struggles will come and go on the offensive and defensive side of the baseball.
Starting Pitching Coming Around
Kyle Gibson, Kohei Arihara and Mike Foltynewicz all looked pretty good in their second start with the club. Folty gave up one run on two hits in seven innings pitched. You can’t ask for more from a starter. The Rangers left ten men on base. Ten. While I want to see them do this long term, it was nice to see some good pitching in Arlington this weekend. I feel like Folty is going to have a big bounce back season. The bullpen also had a decent weekend.
As someone who has watched baseball for many years, I enjoy well pitched games. The weekend games were enjoyable for me because of the good pitching on both sides of the ball. This weeks podcast will focus on the pitching. The Rangers head to Tampa next to take on a Rays team that is 4-5 on the season. If the pitching can continue to get it done overall, I believe the offense will once again come around.
