Mason Englert sat down on zoom with Ben and CJ to talk about his first professional season. Now if you don’t know Mason, he is a 21 year old right handed starter for the Down East Wood Ducks. He is 4-2 with a 3.86 ERA. Mason served a suspension earlier this year for using a sticky substance. He learned from that experience and talked with us about it. Below is a snippet of the interview and a link to the podcast where you can hear the entire thing.
CJ: “I know you had a sticky substance issue earlier in the year, but I like how you said, hey, it happened, got caught, whatever lets move on… Talk about coming out of that..”
Mason: That sticky substance just makes peoples stuff better overall. When I got caught and realized I couldn’t use that stuff anymore, I had to step back, look at my stuff and say where is the low hanging fruit that I can make adjustments to my arsenal to make my stuff play just as good or better without it… Ultimately, sticky stuff makes it spin faster, (but) the vertical and horizontal movement and the velo is more what matters… My spin efficiency is like 92% when I was using the sticky stuff, and I was getting 17 inches of vertical.. and 12 horizontal. My spin’s down quite a bit without the sticky stuff but I bumped up my spin efficiency. So even thought my spin is down the fastball still the same fastball as far as movement wise…”
I appreciated his honesty about getting caught and his conversation on how he has adjusted since. Be sure and catch the entire interview with Mason Englert here or anywhere you get your podcasts!
