Mike Foltynewicz needs to be Designated for Assignment. Charlie Culberson and Brock Holt will probably be designated as well. There could be others. The Rangers need to make room for a slew of prospects. The younger players need to get their feet wet at the major league level asap.
Pitchers
Folty has shown us what he is. It’s not what the Rangers were hoping for when they signed the veteran to a two year deal. Pitchers like Brock Burke, A.J. Alexy and Yerry Rodriguez are already on the 40 man roster. Others like Jake Latz, Cole Winn and of course new trade acquisition like Spencer Howard and Glenn Otto may get a chance, especially Howard and Otto. Folty and Jordan Lyles are under contract for next season as well. Maybe they could send Lyles to the pen and DFA Folty. I don’t really think he is a part of the future.
Hitters
The team has already started calling up young bats like Andy Ibanez and Curtis Terry. They need to call up more as the season goes on. Josh Jung may not get the callup, since he was injured the first half of the season. Players like Sam Huff, Bubba Thompson, Shertan Apostle and Leody Taveras could get a look. They could also add guys to the forty man to take a look at others as well. Nick Solak may come back up at some point, but I am not sure with the way Ibanez is playing right now.
For the first time in my recent memory, the Rangers are finally sold on the rebuild. They are dumping everyone with value and stocking the minor leagues. It is going to be a rough few years still for Rangers fans. If they do everything right (and that is a big if), This team will be really fun to watch again in 3-5 years. Let’s all hope they do everything right and suffer through the next few major league seasons.
