The Rangers have at least seven guys in the major’s or rehabbing right now that are supposed to be starters in the rotation. Jordan Lyles and Mike Foltynewicz. After that there is Kohei Arihara, Taylor Hearn and Kolby Allard. Then they have Glen Otto, Spencer Howard and Dane Dunning. Not to mention Jake Latz and AJ Alexy. How are they planning on getting a look at everyone with this many in Arlington (minus Latz and Alexy)? If they want to get a look at all these guys they are going to have to get creative going forward.
Allard and Hearn need the rest of the season in the rotation to demo for next. So do Howard and Otto most likely. Where does that leave the other guys? I for one do not have the answers to that question. If I did I wouldn’t be writing about it, I would be getting paid to solve it. Truth is, I am not sure what the Rangers are going to do about it. They need Lyles and Folty to eat innings. I don’t believe either of those arms are going anywhere. They are going to need the veteran leadership for the young guys going forward and they are both under contract next season as well.
It will be interesting to see how the team decides to pitch players in the rotation for the remainder of the season. My belief is that they are probably going to piggy back a few guys off each other to keep the pitch counts down for the younger ones. Could be wrong, but that is what I think. Either way, the Rangers need to find a way to get guys into games while managing their innings. Should be fun to watch the remainder of the way.
