Major League Baseball canceled another week of games yesterday, making a season less likely than the day before. Everyone left who cares wants to have a season except for the MLB it would appear.
The Players Association is not completely faultless either, but the owners look worse than the players at this point. All of the imposed deadlines and game cancelations tell me they are completely blind to the effect it is having on the game.
On this week’s Podcast we spoke to Paul Caputo of sportslogos.net about if this will help Minor League Baseball. Paul told us his fear is that people will stop watching baseball all together.
Fans are upset. Players are also upset. MLB does not seem to be upset.
That is the way it appears on the outside to us watching. It’s a vey bad look for the league to say the least.
So What’s the Beef?
The main problem I see is that they are not in a hurry to try and fix it. The lockout has been going on for nearly 100 days, and both sides are trying to position themselves as the compassionate side.
Maybe if they tried fixing their differences instead of blaming each other something could actually get done? I know, what a crazy idea.
The damage that both sides are doing by delaying the season will be hard to repair. It took steroids to get people back after the 1994 strike. It will take more this time.
Can a deal be reached? Of course it can, but will it? Only time will tell, but I am really starting to doubt it.
I am an eternal optimist, but even I am waning on a baseball season. I am preparing myself to really dig into the Minor Leagues and Independent Baseball.
They are rapidly running out of time. Fans are running out of interest.
If this is not repaired soon, the MLB will no longer be the profitable league it once was. I am not sure either side is prepared for that to happen.
