Kolby Allard wasn’t the worst in 2021, not by a long shot (anyone remember Jordan Lyles and Mike Foltynewicz?). Allard had some great starts mixed in with some decent starts.
Why then is everyone not giving him a chance to make the 2022 rotation after his 2021 performance? While Allard didn’t blow the doors off of the rotation in 2021, he was 3-12 with a 5.41 ERA. Sounds terrible but he had some real shining moments on an otherwise bad team in 2021.
Allard started 17 games and got into 32 games total. He struck out 104 in 124.2 innings of work. He only gave 32 free passes during the season as well.
The Texas Rangers have a lot of young talent right now, especially on the pitching side of things. Allard is one of those but the Rangers seem to mostly know what they have in Allard.
That fifth starter spot will include Kolby Allard in it, but I do not believe he will hold it down during the entire season. Allard is who he is, he will keep you in a game, strike out some and walk less. He does not usually get deep into games.
He is kind of tuning into that pitcher that will come in and get the job done. It may not always be pretty, but it is what is needed.
He reminds me of a Colby Lewis type, not the talent level, but the attitude and the fact that he doesn’t seemed bothered by either the highs or lows.
Look for Allard to have a role with the big club in 2022 pitching in the rotation and out of the bullpen both. The Rangers seem to like Allard and I believe that his spot is going to be among the team.
While Rangers fans anticipate the arrival of Jack Leiter, Cole Winn, Ricky Vanasco and others, Kolby Allard will be here doing his job. It doesn’t matter if we are talking about him or not.
