According to a report from The Athletic, Willie Calhoun has made known his desire to leave Texas.
“(I’m) going to go to Triple A and put myself in a position to get traded” Calhoun said. “I do want to be traded.”
Now the Rangers picked up Willie Calhoun from the Dodgers in the Yu Darvish trade, and it is no secret that he has had some setbacks outside his control.
He had a broken jaw from a hbp in spring training of 2020. In 2021 he had hamstring issues that hampered his play.
So Willie went on to say that he was not a fan of the hitting philosophies from bench coach Donnie Ecker and hitting coach Tim Hyer.
In his 6 years on a major league roster, Calhoun is hitting .241 with 32 homers and 103 RBI. He has a career WAR of -1.5.
Willie Calhoun is a player that Rangers fans have rooted for over the past six seasons. He is unhappy being sent down. He should be unhappy.
No player who has spent time over six seasons in the majors is going to be happy being demoted. The question is will he rise to the occasion?
His chance to remake himself has arrived. Willie can either take this opportunity and use his disappointment, or he can squander it.
Time will tell us what he chooses. Here at the Ranger Report, we will keep tabs on him here as we cover the Round Rock Express.
Rangers fans are a patient bunch, and we are forgiving. After Willie has time to cool off it will be interesting to see how he responds.
So his response will tell the organization if he has a future here or not.
