The Texas Rangers traded for Jake Odorizzi on Wednesday, according to multiple sources. Odorizzi, while not a huge splash, is the first splash.
The big news in the trade is that the Rangers off-loaded Kolby Allard, who just has not been good for Texas. Also, they got the Braves to take on $10mm of Odorizzi’s $12 plus million salary.
Allard had a few good starts and stretches over his time with the Rangers. Here is hoping that he can get back on track with a fresh start.
The Numbers:
The 32-year-old right-hander had 12 starts with the Houston Astros and 10 starts for the Atlanta Braves in 2022. He was 6-6 with a 4.40 ERA for both clubs combined with 86 strikeouts and 35 walks.
Odorizzi has a career 3.99 ERA, and has spent most of his career in the American League. In fact, his half a season with Atlanta is his only NL experience.
Jake is not a big strikeout guy. The Rangers don’t really need him to be. If all goes as planned in 2023, he will likely be the fourth or fifth starter on this club.
He is a veteran prescience that will be good for the younger pitchers as they develop. I personally like this signing and think it will be good for the Rangers.
Being on a one year deal does not bother me, as he is most likely a place holder for Jack Leiter, Kumar Rocker, Cole Winn or another prospect who will be ready sometime in 2023.
So welcome to Texas Jake Odorizzi, hope you time here goes well.
