The Bad – I would like to say that the Texas Rangers have been all good this year and there is no need to look at what they have not done well at all, but we all know that is not the case. There are a few things that the Rangers need to improve on if they want to win the West, and eventually make it back to the World Series, and these are what I think those things are.
Defense – The Rangers have committed the most errors in the AL with 73 in the first half. That is almost an error a game. Only the Chicago Cubs are worse with 77 errors before the All-Star game. Elvis Andrus has committed 15 of those and he needs to get better on defense. He needs to make the routine plays as well as the spectacular ones that he makes. Elvis is not the only one, but he is the most notable one. That has to change in the second half. The Rangers gave up far to many unearned runs.
Scoring – The Rangers have been way more inconsistent than I ever expected this season when it comes to scoring runs. They have been almost no hit by a couple of guys that had no right almost no hitting this lineup, and then they would follow that up by rocking someone like Geo Gonzalez. If the Rangers want to win the West, they need to be a lot more consistent in the second half of the season.
Pen – The problem with the Rangers bull pen have been well documented this seasons so far. In a move that kind of surprised me today, the Rangers sent O’Day to AAA ball and re-called Scott Feldman to pitch out of the pen. I hope that O’Day can get it figured out in the minors, because I like him to play a big part later in the season. I still think the Rangers need to make a trade to improve the pen in the second half, and I see them doing it pretty soon. They are usually silent about it, and good at hiding which teams they are talking too, so I look forward to seeing what they will do.
Overall, the Rangers are 10 games over .500 and in 1st place. So, they had a pretty good first half, now I look for them to have a great second half and win the West again so I can be writing about the post season in a few months!!
